Physical Education

About Our PE Curriculum

Across the school, we teach Physical Education using the Complete PE curriculum, which pays close attention to guidance provided by the National Curriculum sequence and content. Our ambitious PE curriculum has the intention of increasing children’s physical literacy, enriching children’s sporting vocabulary and wider view of health and well-being, and putting what they learn into practice.

The following core components and learning domains underpin our teaching of PE, and we strive to weave these concepts into each unit we teach:

  • Physical development (developing competence, agility, balance, coordination, and fundamental movement skills)

  • Cognitive understanding (developing tactics, strategies, decision-making, and an understanding of rules)

  • Social and emotional well-being (building resilience, self-esteem, collaboration, leadership, and a sense of fair play)

  • Healthy, active lifestyles (understanding the benefits of regular physical activity and how it impacts long-term health)

At the Federation of North Walsham Infant and Junior Schools, we aim to provide a rich experience of PE that enables our children to experience both depth and breadth in the activities they cover. This is achieved through Complete PE’s high-quality, sequential learning framework, which includes progressive lesson sequences where we systematically revisit, build upon, and consolidate fundamental skills and concepts from earlier units and previous years.

The methodology for teaching PE at the Federation of North Walsham Infant and Junior Schools is to provide opportunities for children to develop their physical confidence, ignite curiosity about different sports and physical activities, and widen their knowledge of healthy living. We want our children to respond proactively and positively to physical challenges, striving to learn more about teamwork, personal best, and healthy competition. We recognise that our children need to be equipped with the necessary physical competence, confidence, and positive attitudes to sustain lifelong participation in physical activity.

We also recognise that PE encompasses a broad range of skills and draws on disciplines from the wider world such as science (biology and health), mathematics (data and tracking), and PSHE (personal, social, and health education). We believe making these curriculum connections—such as linking physical exertion to heart health or connecting teamwork skills to classroom collaboration—are essential components that help to engage and connect our children with the opportunities PE provides.

By the time our children leave the Federation of North Walsham Infant and Junior Schools, they will have the skills, knowledge, and experience to have a level of independent thinking and physical confidence to carry through to their future education and into their lives beyond the classroom.
